Taxpayers are receiving a mass of fake emails supposedly from the State Tax Service of Ukraine.
Subject of such messages usually refers to alleged “recorded discrepancies in reporting.” Text of the message urges recipients to urgently familiarize themselves with alleged audit report and provide explanations in order to avoid administrative seizure of assets.
In fact, these emails have nothing to do with the Tax Service. They are sent from third-party email addresses and contain links or attachments with malicious software.
Be careful! Opening such files or clicking on links can lead to computer infection and provide attackers with hidden remote access to the user’s device.
In some letters, scammers disguise their email addresses under the official domain of the State Tax Service @tax.gov.ua, some even send them from the third-party addresses.
If the letter comes from another domain, this is a clear sign of forgery. Otherwise, pay attention to the characteristic signs of fraudulent messages.
In particular, presence of attached files in the formats .pdf, .zip, .rar, as well as files with extensions .exe and .scr. It is through such files attackers try to mislead users and gain access to their devices.
Citizens and business entities are urged to follow basic rules of cyber hygiene:
- do not open suspicious attachments and links;
- carefully check the sender’s address;
- do not trust even familiar contacts without additional confirmation;
- use up-to-date antivirus software.
Be vigilant and take care of your data security.
