Home and remote work: what's the difference

, published 15 September 2023 at 09:49

In order to continue business in any conditions, employers transfer employees to remote forms of work: remote or home. Find out how these forms differ from each other and how to correctly register remote employee.

Remote employees work from anywhere of their choosing. At the same time, they must be in contact with employer using information and communication technologies.

Home employee works at the residence place or in other places designated by him/her outside the employer's premises. Such work is characterized by a fixed working area or technical means, for example, tools, equipment for production of products, provision of services or other work. Home employee is "tied" to the address specified in the employment contract and can change it only with the employer's permission.

Working regime is another difference. Home employee usually follows the general working regime of enterprise. Whereas rules of the internal labor regulations do not apply to remote work. He/she distributes working time at his/her own discretion – he/she can work whether early in the morning or late at night.

For both forms of remote work, duration norms of working hours apply:

normal duration — up to 40 hours per week;

reduced (for certain categories of employees) to 24 or 36 hours per week.
