Cyber police and State Tax Service warn about fake emails with malicious software.
Attackers send e-mails about checking illegal activity of counterparties allegedly on behalf of branches of the State Tax Service in Kyiv city. Scammers urge to open file attached to the letter, which is infected with malicious software.
In this way, attackers gain covert access to the victim's computer and transfer money from the company's accounts to controlled ones. To verify information in case of receiving such letters, contact the "hotline" of the State Tax Service of Ukraine (https://tax.gov.ua) at 0-800-501-007.
In order to protect yourself from attackers, cyber police advises to follow basic strategies of protection against computer viruses (https://www.npu.gov.ua/news/komputerni-virusy-ta-iak-vid-nykh-zakhystytysiaporady-kiberpolitsii):
- Refrain from downloading files from untrusted sources and avoid following suspicious links.
- Use and regularly update antiviruses. This will increase your chances of detecting malicious software.
- Update your operating system and software to the latest versions. This will help close potential vulnerabilities. Do not use programs that are of russian origin due to their possible compromise by the special services of the aggressor country.
Check information and don't let scammers mislead you. If you have become a victim of the cybercrime, immediately call the number "102", contact the nearest police station or submit electronic complaint to the cyber police via the link https://ticket.cyberpolice.gov.ua.
